Plant ID please

Hello!

Could someone be kind enough to identify the plant in the photo.

It has been there for a couple of years, since I moved in, haven’t touched it, and it is sprawling out around a crab apple tree.

To be honest I don’t really like it, it’s not really the style of planting I like, but it’s there at the moment because it’s green (although lots of dead bits too) and stops weeds coming up 😑

Thank you!

Carex pendula ... it selfseeds all over the place and can be a real problem as the roots are really difficult to get out.
I’d get it out now before it becomes nigh on impossible.

Carex pendula, probably dropped by a bird. I would dig it out ASAP, you might need to put some effort in, it's tough stuff  :)

    Thank you!

It’s going to be difficult as it’s literally around the trunk of the tree 😑 but it’s got to be done...

Can anyone tell me - is the following a ‘seedling’ of said great grandmother?

I had been waiting to see if that ‘bud’ would open, but I was slightly suspicious as the leaves looked very grassy...

And if it is, how do you recognise a seedling that’s v small? If it just looks like grass?

I think that one's one of the smaller kinds of iris (Iris sibirica, maybe). I think you can afford to wait until the first bud opens.

Yes, l don't think it's an offspring,  it doesn't have the ridged leaves of the carex  :)
