When do raspberry canes need replaced?

Is there a view on this or do they go on forever?

They replace themselves every year with a bit of help from their gardener.  The summer fruiting canes get cut down as soon as their fruit has been picked, thus making way for the new shoots to grow and mature for next year.

The autumn fruiting ones get cut back hard in spring and then produce new shoots which fruit later the same year.

  • Mine were planted years ago (30 odd yrs) and they are still going. Don't know what kind as done by previous owner. 6' high and not a lot of flavour.
