A couple of other contenders, viticella Mary Rose (dark greyish purple, double) and flammula Sweet Summer Love (dark violet red, small flowers, scented). The latter seems to flower longer and later, but those Mary Rose double flowers are very attractive!

Have gone for Mary Rose in the end. It looks just like Aquilegia 'Black Barlow' which I think will work well with the planting in the border.

  • Nice choice! Not one I would've even thought of given your brief; I was expecting you to go for something more like plain old viticella or a species :)

That’s lovely, will go really well with your salvias.

The C. Mary Rose arrived today, what an excellent good sized plant from Taylor's Clematis, and well packaged.
