Why are the buds on my roses just drying and dying ?

    Buds drying and dying on any shrub is usually down to drought.   That compost looks very dry.  

    Gardening in Central Norfolk on improved gritty moraine over chalk ... free-draining.

    Those pots need a good drenching to soak the compost thru and then a regular deep drink, not a dribble.   In spring, mine get a good bucketful or watering can full each week with more frequent drinks as the weather heats up.

    If they've been in those pots a while they'll also need some fertiliser.
