Wilting Seedlings

emily857emily857 Posts: 3
Hello,

I have pricked out cosmos, zinnia and marigolds recently and half of them seem to be wilting?!?!

I thought I was on top of the watering in the hot weather and I have left the greenhouse door and window open all day in the heat. When the heat got too hot I put a curtain on top to prevent the intense heat rays.

I don't know if its dampening off or I haven't watered enough? or the stress of the heat? All the cosmos seeds that i pricked out much earlier have been totally fine.

I do have a large heat mat in the greenhouse for the dahilas that I keep on....I am going to try turning it off in the day to avoid it getting too hot...

HELP?!?! I am so lost....this has never happened before

I always transplant/prick out in cool weather or wait for rain if possible. I think it was simply too hot for them.

PS, you could try early mornings and late evening, if no cooler weather is forecast.

Have they all been in the greenhouse - with a heat mat on nearby?
It's  early for seeds to be germinating and big enough to prick out. They're probably very weak anyway, as a result of being in so much heat. Some will cope better than others too. A spray/mist of water is also the best method of watering small seedlings, and do it in the evening so that they're not in the full glare of the sun.

If they're inside, they'd probably have been better in a slightly cooler spot, and then allowed to grow a bit more before pricking out. If you have more seeds, it's worth sowing more.  :)
It's a place where beautiful isn't enough of a word....

I live in west central Scotland - not where that photo is...
