Titan Scarifyer problem

I have an electric scarifyer, relatively unused. However, when I last tried to use it, it started but then the motor within seconds seemed to run out of life and stopped. . I tried starting it several times with the same result each time. The vents are clear with very little build up of dust inside the motor housing. What could be the problem, please?

Not a clue.  For the record, I have same machine five or six years old, used and tagged around slot, working fine.

How old is it? I think take it back.
  • I asked OH who is handy knows electrics, and his answer was strictly on the understanding that he, personally, would
    a) unplug
    b) turn it over and rotate the 'blades' by hand
    c) turn it back over and by tilting it up so only the back touched the ground
    d) switch it on to see if it runs
If it still won't go I agree with trying for a refund.

Is it possible that something has become wrapped round the shaft of the rotating bit (technical description) and causing it to jam.  That might cause the motor to overheat and a cutout to operate.  As it starts OK each time it doesn't seem to be an electrical issue.
  • Thanks for the interest shown in my problem,
which I have now resolved. Although there was very little dust under the motor cover, I used a Hoover to suck out  any bits I could locate. Tried the machine and it's running perfectly. So my question now is why? Does such a small amount of dust cause a motor to behave in this way?

My guess would be that the build up of dust was either blocking vents in the motor causing it to overheat, or jamming some part of the mechanism with the same result.  At least its fixed.  I want to get a scarifier but little to no chance at the moment.
  • When it works this Titan is good. Not too powerful so easy to use and cost about £80.
