Anyone know what this tool is?

I found this tool buried in an old compost heap on our new allotment plot, 5-7 years under soil and not a rust spot on it. It looks like a trowel but it has a serrated edge on one side. Can anyone tell me what it was and what it was used for? Also how was the handle attached as I’d like to make it useable again if at all possible. Thx

Hello Nessa. Welcome to the forum. A picture might help in the identification but from your description it sounds like a Japanese Hori Hori trowel. This is mine:
As you can see, the wooden handle is riveted onto the trowel.

Lucky find if it is a hori-hori - they're not cheap as chips :). Hopefully you can fit a new handle on it.

This is about as near as I can get but basically they are all designed to dig and cut through annoying roots

I do think you might find it extremely difficult to fit a handle to yours though.

Not a horihori but looks as if somebody thought the basic principle was a good one and came up with a variant.

I read the thread title and thought it was going to be a picture of Piers Morgan....
