I’m wondering if the ‘terrible’ photo is a Himalayan Honeysuckle?
@Nanniemo That's what @JennyJ had suggested: Leycesteria formosa = Himalayan honeysuckle. Much better and less confusing to use proper botanical/scientific/Latin names than common names.
Just for your information @Papi Jo I hadn’t seen Jenny’s reply & I couldn’t remember the botanical name. The OP responded to me & therefore must have found it easier to google the common name than trying to remember the correct spelling of the botanical name. In the end, does it really matter as long as the OP is happy. Personally when I ask for an identification I’m happy with either & grateful for the help!
A friend of mine has a Leycesteria and she calls it Himalayan buddleia (which actually makes some sense because you prune it like a Buddleia - cut back hard in spring). I knew there was another (perhaps more widely used) common name but I couldn't remember it!
Doncaster, South Yorkshire. Soil type: sandy, well-drained
First of all, thank you for everyone who has left posts. Jennyj, apologies. I read your post then had to go back to work and forgot to reply. I should have included you in my reply to Nanniemo. Tomhiskey, thanks for the suggestion about the app but I have a good old fashion BlackBerry and the camera is dreadful. The pictures were taken ( with a lot of persuasion ) on my step daughters iPad. No way would she allow me add an app! Once again, thanks to all of you.
