Lawn problem

I have clumps of very coarse grass in my ‘ordinary’ lawn. The green blades are wide and the bottom inch or more where they grow out of the soil are white.  These clumps grow a good inch above soil level and are dangerous - I’ve tripped on one a few times.

What are they, how can I get rid and how to stop them growing again ?

thanks

Possibly something like yorkshire fog. You can dig them out and reseed the bare patches, but I don't think you can stop them coming back, just try and get them out when they're small (same as any other weed).
Doncaster, South Yorkshire. Soil type: sandy, well-drained
