Best way to kill off old Lawn?

I intend to lay a new lawn from seed, it is fairly large - would this advice from an old thread still be best:

1. Apply Glyphosate weedkiller - wait until all grass/weeds are dead (takes about 2 weeks) and reapply to any spots, if necessary.

2. Rotivate the dead lawn.

3. Use roller to level and compact.

4: Lay grass seed

5. Keep watered until well established.

I believe glyphosphate takes 3 weeks to work would covering the lawn to stop light getting through be better?

What about rotovating then covering? would most of the grass die off as it has been buried?

Any other advice?

I would rotavate and cover it in black plastic sheet. Has always worked for me.

Thanks Gemma, how long do you cover it for?

As long as you need to. Typically, if you rotavate you want at least a couple of months for the soil to settle again before final leveling, else it will end up uneven. You could keep it covered all that time and the old grass will be long gone when you are ready for the final leveling and seeding or turf.

  • Hi men8ifr, I am about to take on the same project. How did you get along? Any lessons to pass on. Did you directly rotovate the dead turf in or removed it with a turf cutter? Thanks for any tips.
