Apparently dying olive

I have an olive about ten years old which has been growing quite happily in a pot. I repotted it last year and it appeared to be fine. But in the last few weeks the leaves have started to turn brown, go brittle and fall off. It's not an issue with watering and, as I say the plant has been quite happy till recently.

Olives are an evergreen plant and most evergreens will start dropping their oldest leaves now so they can grow new ones. Either it's that or your olive's got caught by very cold winds or unexpected overnight frosts last week. I wouldn't give up hope just yet.

Most olives will survive light frosts but the upper growth will be damaged. If it starts to regrow in a month or so's time it may be from the base. In which case you have a choice, an olive bush or keep it warmer over winter.

  • Our olive tree (we live down in Hampshire) has seemingly survived 3 winters with no protection! We were naive at first (was a moving in present) however it is thriving and has survived 2 repotting aswell. Like I say maybe we are just lucky!
  • My olive tree has been in the conservatory since i got it as a gift but now I notice some leaves have gone black/brown at the tips. I wondered if it was the sun coming through the window. Any thoughts please?
