I have a potted Christmas tree for about 5 years it's just started to turn brown

Has your tree ever been repotted with new compost into a progressively larger pot? Is it regularly watered and fed?
Quite often what happens is the roots grow and fill the pot, using all the nutrients in the soil and compacting it so much that water cannot penetrate the rootball and the tree suffers from drought.
Gardening in Central Norfolk on improved gritty moraine over chalk ... free-draining.
