Bedding Dahlias

Hi Guys,

I love a bargain, and I was wondering if any of you had any experience of buying cheap bedding dahlias and using the several years running?

So, when I was doing my shop for a few essentials in my local Lidl I picked up a pack of 6 rather sickly looking bedding dahlias, with little yellow flowers. I realise that these are supposed to be bedding plants and presumably by the price treated as annuals and discarded at the end of the season. The cheapskate in me was wondering if I potted them up and cut off the flowers that are there which have presumably been forced to look good when on sale, do you think they will develop Tubers this year to allow for lifting and storing over winter for use again next year, and hopefully propagating from and ongoing yearly use?

Has anyone had any experience of doing this with the Bedding style Dahlias. I read somewhere that this is possible, so wondered if anyone has ever done this?

Thanks,
G

It is quite possible to do what you say, although some Dahlias are very reluctant to form tubers.
