Evergreen ground cover for planting under rozanne

harmonyharmony Posts: 403
Hi, I have transplanted a 2 year old geranium Rozanne to a Sunny South facing spot. It has just started growing but there is roughly a foot of bare soil all around and I was wondering if it's a good idea to plant  evergreen ground cover to cover the bare soil (i hate bare soil lol). Is there anything that would not mind being swamped by Rozanne once she gets going. Thanks...

Evergreen ground cover will not enjoy being covered by another plant. What about Spring bulbs, which will die down as Rozanne gets going, eg Snowdrops or crocuses?

I have daffodils, shown here, and prior to the daffodils lots of white crocuses

And then the Rozanne takes over. The other geranium is Anne Thompson (or maybe Ann Folkard) growing through a peony support for extra height. The bird feeders have been moved for reasons of avian hygiene but the bird bath is in the same place.

Tete e tete would be a good shout I think.

I've had to dead head approximately 3/4 of mine just as two rozannes I have are starting to put more leaves on.

Would be timed well to combine the two and have the rozanne take over as the daffs exit stage right.

My Geranium Rozanne is my ground cover, it spreads so much, but I know what you mean about those bare patches until it gets going. I find the same with Achillea, such a small insignificant clump in a sea of soil until it takes off and fills the space. Early flowering annuals are another option to fill the gaps.

Hello Harmony, Your 'Rozanne' is a ground covering plant itself so you just need to have a little patience, it will soon grow in all directions and cover the soil. it won't appreciate anythin g else under it.

I have opted for a combination of early flowering spring bulbs, Chionodoxa forbesii glory of the snow and G. Rozanne. This works quite well. See the story at http://www.rezeau.org/wp-garden/en/chionodoxa-forbesii-5/

Alliums could work too. I also let my Rozanne swamp my clumps of Iris sibirica which doesn't seem to mind.

I use hellebores (Anna's red) that flower before the Rozanne start. Then the hellebore leaves are shaded out as the sun grows stronger - good for all.
