Is there any reason why you are using a roller on it?
the reason for this was that it seemed to have some mounds on it, it wasnt level and internet told me that rolling might help level it out.... is that wrong? what would have been a better to achieve a level surface
It's not a great idea, especially on clay, as it compacts the soil, reducing oxygen and water in the soil. The usual advice is to lift turf, remove soil underneath to correct a bump, then replace turf. A roller is more for *gently* firming newly laid turf so it connects with the soil.
Anyway I wouldn't fret too much at this stage, I'm sure your lawn will start to recover. As I said, I've gone a bit mad with scarifying my lawn in the past (looking worse than yours!) and it recovered OK!
ok thanks... no more rolling for me... i'll be patient and see how it goes with the lawn feed and seed
Hi
I would cover you seeds with sieved top soil as compost will dry out quickly.
The links that you’ve quoted are for mainly lawn top dressing that you brush in to your lawn surface after aeration (spiking your lawn with a garden fork). That, in its self, is good lawn management and a good bases to sow your grass seed on. Based on the the size of your lawn you would only need around 4 bags of top soil to finely cover your grass seed.
Wilko’s do a 20 litre bags of top soil for around £2 a bag
I'd agree with @Stevedaylilly. I think it's been very lush [possibly too much food initially] and you've then cut it too short. It'll recover. As already said, just try and level out the imperfections, and then keep it a bit longer when you cut, at least for the next month or two. Little and often is always better, especially for a newer lawn.
It's a place where beautiful isn't enough of a word....
I live in west central Scotland - not where that photo is...

Thanks Steve, that picture only shows the lower part of the garden, i've got an upper section of the Garden in the same condition that is probably about 4 times the size of the lower section that you have seen hence why i was looking at the big bags
