  • John Innes no. 3 or a 'Rose, Tree and Shrub' compost is better than Multipurpose for a rose in container.

The usual advice is to use a loam-based compost (John Innes No.3) as MPC doesn’t have enough nutrients in it to keep your rose going for more than a couple of months. If you can’t get that, you could use a 50/50 mix of the MPC and ericaceous and mix in a bit of garden soil if you have it. Unless it is desperate to be repotted, I would be inclined to wait until winter anyway, when it is dormant and supplies of loam-based compost are available again.

If you do wait, in the meantime, you could scrape away a few inches of the soil from the top of the existing pot and top up with what you have to give it a boost, plus feed it some liquid fertiliser now and then.
