Geranium macrorrhizum 'Ingwersen's Variety'

Morning everyone,

I have a Geranium macrorrhizum 'Ingwersen's Variety' which has become rather hidden.  Is it ok to move/divide now as it’s just beginning to come into bud?  Also, I have terracotta pots of varying sizes in a shady area of the garden  .... can’t move them as have no more room (😬) so has anyone experience of growing them in pots in partial shade?  Any advice would be appreciated.  It’s such a beautiful plant, I’d hate to lose it.  Thanks in advance everyone x

You can divide it any time you want really, but now is an excellent time to do it, as it is starting to grow vigorously. I've grown geraniums in pots, but more to keep them ticking over while I find a spot for them in the garden.

Thanks @WillDB.   I know they don’t flower for a particularly long period, so if I divide and put into terracotta pots now, can I then plant out in the borders when they’ve finished flowering?

Have you ever had this flower twice? I haven't had any luck on that front, even after cutting back after the first flush of flowers.

I would move it now if it's really hidden. It's flowers are too pretty not to be on show. I found when I divided mine it split into a few separate small plants as its roots are almost rizome like and not clump forming. I just planted 3 pieces close together to give the illusion of one big plant, and spread the others around the garden to bulk up. Just water them weekly for the rest of the season to establish well again.
I have found that any hardy geranium I have put into a nice feature pot and overwintered has been destroyed by vine weevil, so would not advise you do that personally.

Thank you @Hazyb.   As soon as the sun makes its way round, I’ll be out there!

Thank you @lilysilly.  I agree ... aren’t they the prettiest little flowers?   My plan now is to divide and put in pots then transfer to the border after flowering x
  • Last question, when dividing, do I have to be gentle or are they pretty tough?

@Allyblueeyes that sounds like a wise plan. It is very pretty, I've never had it rebloom again after trimming it back either, which is shame.
