Can a dying plant be revived?

Was given a lovely little planter for mothers day....but I'm not blessed with green-fingers and am ashamed to admit that once again I think I've killed another plant. My daughter's (rightly so) so upset with me. Is there anything I can try that might revive the poor thing.
