Can I grow chillies from supermarket veg?

We have a big bag of bird eye chillis and they're just at the point of starting to dry out. I'm wondering if I could plant some of the seeds or if I need to buy special seeds?

Should I plant them fresh, or dry them out first... and what sort of conditions do they need to get started?

If they are already drying out then the seeds will be ok to plant now.  If you plan on growing them inside on your windowsill they should do OK.  However, 'shop' chillies may have been grown somewhere radically different in climate and probably won't do well outside and may even struggle in an unheated greenhouse.  If you want to grow in either of those places, you are best to buy seed which is for varieties bred to grown in the UK or other northern climates.  Bit late to sow chilli seeds for those types this year, unless you grow them inside the house somewhere in full sun, where they will be fine and are perennial, often ripening about Christmas time.

If they're drying out, rather than going mouldy, perhaps you could dry them some more to use in cooking. At least they wouldn't be wasted

Yeah that's what I'll do but I figured I could spare one to try planting and see what happens.

  • I know its not Chillis, but I planted some Orange pips that came from Oranges grown in Southern Spain where I used to live, same village even, so I did it just to see if I could get something for nostalgic reasons. Today I had to pot them on as their roots were appearing at the bottom. I know I wont get oranges but it looks like it will be a nice plant to keep inside in the winter.  I'm all for trying out odd seeds and pips, you never know!😊
