Prunus Serrula

Our ornamental cherry was planted in winter about a year ago. We have no signs of life on the branches. Should we prune it back or wait another year?

Scrape the bark of one of the highest twigs - if it is green underneath then there is still some hope.  If brown under the bark then move down a few inches and try again.  Keep doing that until youget the the main trunk and if you don't see any green, it is dead.
To confirm, try bending the end of a branch by 90 degrees - it will spring back if alive.  If it snaps, that part is dead.
If it showed no growth last year and has no leaf buds starting to grow now, I think it's done for, unfortunately.
A trowel in the hand is worth a thousand lost under a bush.
  • Ok thank you Bob. Sadly it’s dead!
