Bird feeder advice?

Posts

  • I put out suet balls but leave a mess below but the birds soon clear that up too
  • I have had Stokes Select feeder for a while and I am really happy with it. It is very solid, holds a lot, and is very easy to clean. The full bright orange color attracts orioles easily. Their favorite supplemental foods: nectar, jelly, and fruit.
  • Very much doubt it would attract any orioles here!

I get most of my loose seed from Garden Wildlife Direct.  We have a large population of squirrels so all the feeders are squirrel proof.  I buy the no mess mix, plus niger seed, sunflower hearts, peanuts and the favourite of the long tailed tits - high quality fat balls.  I feed live mealworms from April to June/July and I get those from Vine House Farm.  For storage I have a large plastic bin with a close fitting lid which lives under the car port.

@andy orris Try greasing the feeder poles to deter the squirrels.

Squirrels can chew through a surprising amount of materials  ;)
Metal is about the only thing they can't manage.
It's a place where beautiful isn't enough of a word....

I live in west central Scotland - not where that photo is...
  • Best results after lots of trial and error are with Sunflower hearts. No mess and have attracted such a wide range of birds I never thought we’d see in our garden.
Changing my feeder to a squirrel proof one has made a huge difference as well. Highly recommend squirrel buster mini bird feeder from Amazon 👌

You need to buy decent bird food. The cheap stuff is full of 'filler', and is more expensive in the long run because of the waste.  :)

It usually has barley as well which will grow, and the millet will, but there's a lot less growth from dropped seed with a no mess mix, so it's easier to deal with.
I buy sunflower hearts there, but I buy everything else online. There are lots of good outlets, and buying the large bags is much more economical too.
