Dying Bare Root Strawberries.

For the second year I have purchased in early spring, bare root strawberries this year Malling Opal. I planted them into pots in a mixture of ¾ compost and ¼ manure with a few chicken pellets. Initially they started to sprout young green leaves and grew on well in a frost free greenhouse, but after 3-4 weeks they are all dying back. Leaves turning brown. They have been kept moist throughout and this in the 2nd year this has happened. What am I doing wrong?

Your planting mixture sounds very rich, maybe too much. I have lots that survive despite neglect in poor soil and being very dry in various corners of the greenhouse so maybe they are too wet as well.

It's my first time with strawberries this year. I potted 30 on into MPC with nothing else and they are like little thugs already. I think steephill has it that they do not need all the manure and feed in the pot.

I'm literally learning out of a book, the advice there is the manure goes deep in the planting beds so the roots find it eventually, remembering the bed could be there for 3-4 years. Nothing about putting it in the pots.
