Suggestions to replace cotinus lilla- which died!

I planted a cotinus lilla in the middle of this bed last spring, and it as died! Red leaves just visible on photo.Any ideas why it died?

I want something with red or purple leaves, ideally evergreen but couldn't find anything suitable, hence went for the deciduous lilla.
