Potted Acer palmatum problem

I have an acer in a pot and I have noticed that one of its branches bark has turned red and is partially dead compared to the rest of the tree (bark on that green). The branch on the left hand side is dead, the one on the right is still alive but isn’t looking happy. Does anyone know what might be the issue? And how to treat it?

    This often happens to japanese acers and there can be a number of reasons, Verticillium Wilt being one of them.  Whatever the cause, the only remedy is to remove the whole affected branch completely.  I've had to do this several times over the years but the tree has always recovered.  I would cut the branch off here, where the purple line is:

    Ah! that is what I suspected it might be but wanted a second opinion before I started surgery! Thank you for the help!
