I found this tree basically hidden right in the corner of the garden when I moved in (July 2019). It was in a desperate state (most branches had fallen off or didn’t take much encouragement) I brought it out from the corner a couple of weeks back. Any clues?

Not in that state.  Give its pot a good soak in a bucket of water till no more air bubbles appear then place it in a sheltered spot to dran and top dress with some fresh compost and a feed of slow release food such as blood, fish and bone or pelleted chicken manure if you can.   Keep it watered but not drowning.

Take another pic when the leaves have unfurled some more.

Thank you - I was wondering if that was the case (and that being a reason why it was stuck right in a shady corner out of the way)

It could well be a Japanese maple.  They don't like full sun or strong winds but they do need food and water.
