Turnips and Swedes.

Can it be successful to sow these root vegetables in cells, as previous attempts have not been successful in the open ground. Very poor germination.

    Yes, they grow well when started in modules and then transplanted to the ground when large enough.  Beetroot is another one which does well when started like that. Just avoid using them for carrots, parsnips or other root veg which form under the soil.
    A trowel in the hand is worth a thousand lost under a bush.
