Leeks

I have planted leek seeds in cardboard egg boxes, I have kept the boxes damp, I am now getting an orange mould on the boxes, is this a problem and if so what should I do?

    Have the seedlings germinated?
If they're large enough to handle you can move them to small pots.
Have a look here, see if it's of any help  :)

  • Hi AnniD, thank you for your reply, the seedlings are between 60 and 100mm tall and appear to be ok it is just on the cardboard that the mould is present. If I can manage it I will post a photo.

That always happens to cardboard and other biodegradable pots and is caused by a fungus which is feeding on the dead matter (ie the biodegrading has already started.)  The fungi involved are all harmless to living plants. :)
A trowel in the hand is worth a thousand lost under a bush.
  • Happy days. Thank you for that good news Bob. As you may can tell I any new to this game, but have been saving egg boxes for a good few months now ready for this summer, not knowing that I was going to have so much time for it. So it is good to know they are good for the job. Cheers again.
