Does anyone recognise this ? I think it could be a weed.

    Looks like Welsh poppy (Papaver cambricum) to me.

    My first thought was creeping buttercup, but I think Bob's right.  Welsh poppies and I live in a state of armed neutrality.  I do like them, but they have a way of growing everywhere but where they're wanted.  They self-seed like crazy.

    There's a photo about half way down this page:
    Note they are called Meconopsis cambrica now I think. :) They do indeed self-seed a lot but are easily recognised and pulled-up from where you don't want them.

    As soon as the flowers pass, pull off the flower head. My garden is full of them.
    They seem to manage to seed themselves in the middle of clumps of other stuff and their tap roots make them difficult to remove

    True, if you don't get them out as seedlings, the perennial tap root forms and they can then be more difficult.  I don't know if it's my clay soil, but they don't go too crazy here.

    Look I've got the same! I find them turning up in pots , planters around the gravelled pond and their special ! Because I'm Welsh and proud, Enjoy.
