Can I mulch over newly sown annual seeds in my borders?

I'd would like to mulch to avoid weeds sprouting up in my new borders and have lots of bark chippings I can use for this. However, last week I scattered quite a few annual seeds (poppies, cornflowers, nigella) in hope of getting some colour this year (all the perennials and grasses are teeny new plants) If I mulch with bark will I prevent the annuals from germinating? Any ideas greatly welcome.

    If it stops weeds sprouting, it will do the same for your flower seeds.
    In London. Keen but lazy.

    That's the main drawback of mulching - it blocks the self-sowers as well as the weeds.

    This is an argument for mulching in the Autumn I think. I'm away to be doing some shortly but have bulbs to contend with so it will be bit-part for the time being.
