What is this plant and how do I prune?

We’ve recently bought a house and are trying to fix the extremely overgrown garden. It looks like it was once a well thought out garden and has some interesting plants so I’m not wanting to prune without knowing what I’m doing. Any help would be much appreciated

Hi, and welcome to the Forum.
It looks like some form of Juniper. maybe one of the forms of Juniperus Pfitzeriana .
IMHO , it's not a thing of great beauty and it's taking up a huge chunk of space. I'd remove it altogether.
It's your garden of course, but pruning something that overgrown is unlikely to leave you with a lovely plant.
