My acers keep dying...

I was wondering if anyone could look at these photos and tell me what is wrong with my acers. I had a well established one start to die last year and now my young ones are also dying. Any help would be greatly appreciated 😊

    There's no photo @burrowsrachael.
However, lack of water at critical times, is the most likely reason.
It's a place where beautiful isn't enough of a word....

I live in west central Scotland - not where that photo is...

Acers often "shed" branches but yours do look a bit a bit excessive, watering is key when it is in a pot but also if the plant is congested and upper leaves cover lower branches then the lower ones will die back as they are not getting enough light. Wind is another big reason for a plant to shut off exposed branches. Take off all those dead bits this will open up the plant & let more light and air in. Water well but equally don't flood it or let the roots sit in water. As its in a pot if it's in a windy spot move it to somewhere more sheltered if possible.
    AB Still learning

  • Can I just ask... how protected from wind should an acer be? Mine are in a corner where they are 75% protected but catch (like today) Northerly (NE) winds. Surely it’s near impossible to fully protect from wind?

@Samridout92   generally its better that they are protected especially young trees. @Allotment Boy is spot on above. Mine is in a similar state but 75% is more than adequate as as you say you can't protect from wind completely and NE winds are the worst as they are generally colder and drier. That said, I have one large acer which is totally in the open but its at least 30 years old.

I bet very paranoid when I see a NE/N breeze and I see them rustling! Silly I know! I will move them if it’s ever very strong and or very cold

Does that ceramic pot have drainage holes and is it raised off the ground?
