Have the same problem. I thought I might try mostly filling with MPC and then putting a shallow layer of seed compost at the top for sowing. I usually sow direct in pots.
Good idea with the compost. I’ve got several terracotta pots of differing sizes which I’m going to use for the herbs .... can the seeds be sown directly into them rather than seed trays? x
Sorry - I had to go out @Allyblueeyes, but I see your question was answered re the sieving. Some of the MP stuff is quite lumpy, so it's definitely worth trying to get it finer for small seeds, although I do nothing with it for basil - I just sow lightly in small pots, and put a very fine layer on top. I've just done some, and it's all germinating nicely.
I don't do many herbs from seed - I usually get a small plant and do cuttings. Chives are easy to split when they get to a decent size.
It's a place where beautiful isn't enough of a word....
I live in west central Scotland - not where that photo is...
I've sown basil, coriander and parsley in MP compost this year. Oregano, marjoram, thyme, rosemary, chives and mint are in pots or beds and go on from year to year.
Actually, I don't usually bother to sow parsley I just buy a plant from the supermarket and split it up into several larger pots and it keeps going all season.
