To Dig or Not?

A neighbour has removed turfs on my lawn for a veggie patch 4 x 8ft for me. Should I dig it over or plant directly into the soil? I'm on the Chilterns, mix of chalk and clay, friable soil.

You need to dig it over this first time and best add some organic matter, such as well-rotted manure (bagged stuff is ideal) to feed the veg as the grass will have taken much of the goodness from the soil.  If you are really lucky and have good soil which you can push a garden fork into without using your feet, then you can just turn it over with the fork, add fish, blood and bonemeal (follow instructions on packet) to provide the plant food and then rake it level and smooth before planting your veg plants or sowing seed.
A trowel in the hand is worth a thousand lost under a bush.
