    @Posy - I've always had mine in part shade, but when they get sun, it isn't at the hottest part of the day. We don't get as much hot weather here either - or hot for such long periods. Perhaps that's enough to make a difference too.
    A high water table will be tricky. Perhaps a little raised bed of some kind would help a bit?

    It's a place where beautiful isn't enough of a word....

    Thanks, FG. Yes , I build up the beds to raise the roots above the wettest ground. I think I will experiment with a bit more shade because that border can bake a bit. The more ordinary aquilegifolium (spelling?) have no problems.

    I have several different thalictrums all of which get a quite a lot of sun.  I don’t especially water them even though my soil here in Suffolk is very light and sandy.  Lucky I guess?

    Enilorac, I take the view that when plants die that is (bad) luck, but when they thrive it is certainly skill.
