Plants for a Cornish Hedge.

We have built a new stone hedge and wish to plant something on the top of it.  It is in a sunny position but exposed (We are in Cornwall, a mile from the sea)  We do not want anything that grows too high - I was considering lavender, but am open to suggestions?

Can you post a photo?   Use the little postcard shaped sun and mountain icon above the reply box to load an image.  If it doesn't work, resize to make it smaller.

Oooooh that's fabulous ....... deep envy here  :D

I've always thought that the Spiny Restharrow would be good atop a Cornish hedge ... at least no one would try to clamber over it and damage it.

By the way ... welcome to the forum  :)

A pleasure ... please give our love to Cornwall ... we're usually there every year but have had to cancel this year 😭 We're having to manage with webcams of the coast ... it's lovely up here in Norfolk but we love Cornwall  <3

That is an impressive wall.  I imagine it will get quite warm and dry in summer, especially with coastal winds so I would look for a broad mixture of plants that like sun and can cope with drought.  Have a look at these - all small shrubs and evergreen:

    Hardy fuchsia?
North East Somerset - Clay soil over limestone
  • Thank you for your suggestions.  I am familiar with some of these plants and they could look very pretty.
  • A hedge full of fuschia in bloom could look amazing in the summer.

It could but you need to bear in mind that they need quite a bit of moisture to look good and that may prove difficult in that wall - raised, above ground water level, stones heating up in summer....
