I have been using wood moss for my flytrap for a couple of years, as I couldn't find Sphagnum locally.  Since using this, a mossy carpet has developed around my flytrap, and my sundews, and it looks very similar to the moss you see in UK gardens.  My guess is that you can use your garden moss.  The main thing to consider is that whatever medium you use, it should contain as little nutrients as possible (minimal soil), and it should retain water well.
