Hey folks we have a plant growing in our wooded area of the garden that we can’t identify. It is popping up everywhere in long narrow very straight shoots and all seem to be connected just under the surface by a shared root structure please see attached photos. Can anyone identify it or do I need to wait until it begins to have leafs. It’s very woody. I’d love to know best way of dealing with it and removing/preventing it thanks
Looks like willow to me. Not sure which variety ... we’d need to see the leaves and even then they can cross pollinate resulting in hybrids.
Traditionally willows were grown like that in damp Osier beds to harvest the withies (those straight upright shoots) for basket making, woven fencing/hurdles etc. and to fill in the gaps between the beams back in the days when house walls were built of ‘wattle and daub’ which was woven withy panels covered in clay.
Lol, thanks very much. I was hoping someone would confirm it was willow. Are there any secrets hints or tricks to removing it ? Is it just a case of pulling it up out of the ground by the root and disposing of it? Thanks again for being kind enough to reply.

Looks like you have a career as a basket and hurdlemaker ahead of you 😉. https://musgrovewillows.co.uk/living-willow-info
