Trachelospermum jasminoides

I have one of these which has well outgrown its now rotted bamboo trellis which was only about 6 feet tall. It only has new growth on the ends of the stem so if I pick it up and put it on a higher support it will look terrible. Will it survive if I hack it back hard to give it a taller new support?

I would be inclined to remove the old piece of trellis, fasten something to your wall (plastic mesh or larger wooden trellis) and train the plant to it rather than 'hack it back hard'
