Hey thank you for the tips on treating the laurel. Im not too green fingered but I will definitely do what you suggested. We have been here a month thus far and I’ll need help figuring how not to kill what’s in the garden!!!!!!!
As for the flies.... I’ll check for dead bodies!! Lol other than that I’ll be spraying diluted washing  liquid x

Is the laurel a stand alone plant or part of a hedge?

The washing up liquid won't do anything I'm afraid.

Don’t use washing up liquid. 😢 It won’t get rid of the flies, may harm lots of beneficial insects and other wildlife and anyway, spraying liquid on leaves in sunny spots can scorch the leaves.

My guess is that the flies are enjoying a spot of sunbathing to warm up
... many flying insects need to do this.

But yes, cut the laurel back, clear out any dead leaves and weeds/grass from the base and feed and mulch. You’ll have a much smarter and healthier hedge.

    😊

I'd agree with @Dovefromabove. Insects are often enjoying the very welcome warmth at this time of year if they can get it.
    Bit like humans  ;)

  • Rather intriguingly I came across this feed as my laurel has also been absolutely covered in the past few weeks. The last couple of days however all the flies seem to have died off but mostly remain attached to the leaves themselves?!?! Any guesses as to why?!
