That is a really good suggestion @lyn. It can be important to have a steady, slower drain. Luckily I only need a few baskets to cover unsightly/dull areas and I find them helpful when hardening off some smaller plants, away from too many slugs and snails!

We lined ours with moss a few years ago and planted trailing nepeta along the sides. Now every year I simply excavate out the old soil from the middle, trim the nepeta roots, and replace with fresh.
We have very mossy woods near us and around this time of year as it dries it gets kicked/picked out and lies loose across the paths, every now and then I collect a couple of dog poo bags full and re-pack the basket ad-hoc. I don't recommend picking it live as aside from the obvious legality of doing so it will dry out and die anyway.
