New Build Garden Ideas

Hi

I have recently moved into a new build home and the garden is very much a blank slate. I am really struggling to come up with ideas to utilise the space I have, partly owing to the 'L' shape fo the plot. The sun is mostly to the rear of the garden, around the garage in the evening, or at least that has proven to be the case based on what little sun we've had since I moved in! Any suggestions appreciated!

Check the orientation for your garden, that way, you will be able to predict where the sun falls or not. Then you need to think about the amount of time you will spend in the garden, and how much time you want to spend actually doing the gardening. For instance, having grass will mean spending a lot of time mowing in the warmer months. Then there is the yearly maintenance of keeping the grass looking well.

Planning borders, shape and size - classic school-boy errors are under-estimating size of all plants including shrubs and trees. If in doubt, always be generous. Utilising walls, fences and creating screening or separate areas either with living plants or more trellis/pergolas.

Finally, the style of garden you want. The soil looks like it's been worked on, so next thing is to check the type of soil you have. Clay (lumpy and sticky often difficult to dig into or water taking ages to disperse), Loamy to Sandy dusty soil that dry out quickly. The PH of your garden soil may also help you choose some plants that are more specific in their needs. Once you have know this, post back and I'm sure plenty of posters have ideas for you.

I have been working on my 'new build' garden for 18 years now.
Yours looks very similar to mine at the start though yours is possibly a bit bigger.
It has gone through many incarnations.
Early on I decided to have no lawn as the ground is heavy clay.
There is a figure of 8 path round it so you don't see it all at once and now that the shrubs have grown it has height,it was all very flat like yours at the start.
Don't plan it all at once and work out from the house.
Don't forget things like a washing line/rotary dryer.
Just remember that a garden is not instant and takes time to develop and remember to enjoy it!!
