Mulching

Mulching - I just love that word... so today I finally got around to doing the spring mulch. It looks like most of us are going to have a bit more time to do the garden this Spring

I think mulch is my third favourite English word, first being "plankton" and second, "besmirched".  My favourite Welsh word is "bendigedig", literally meaning "blessed", but used to mean anything really really good.  And my favourite Wenglish word is "splendigedig".

I love the words globule and puddle. I heard someone recently describe himself as a " rapscallion" , that's one I've not heard in years.

  • must try and shoehorn a few of these words into my next video 😊
  • what do you use to mulch? Is bark a good idea?

Sure, that will help keep the moisture down and repress weeds. But it might be acidic depending on the bark you use. Bark is a popular and cheap mulch.

I use it [bark] round shrubs, but I don't put it round many perennials, and certainly not over them. They'd be wet and rotten within  a month here.
It also depends on the look you want, and the soil, climate and conditions you have. If you have drier conditions, bark is very useful for retaining it, but you wouldn't put it down until the ground's damp, so that you're retaining moisture. It also might look odd if you have a very contemporary garden. Decent compost is also good, and you can re use stuff that's been used over summer for annuals etc.

There's a couple of recent threads about mulch if you do a search of the forum using the box at the top of the page  :)
It's a place where beautiful isn't enough of a word....

I live in west central Scotland - not where that photo is...
