Terrace Garden Tidy

Hi all,
I'm a novice with time on their hands, hoping to tidy up my terrace garden. 

Could someone please give me some pointers where to start. I have a spade and that's about it. 

Those planks of wood indicate where a fence will be once I get round to getting one up. But for the moment - I'd just need some basic tips to make it look it a bit better. 

I have no strong opinion on how I want it to eventually look, so just looking for recommendations.

    We need more info - length, width, which way it faces as that affects light levels and whereabouts you are as that affects weather, exposure, rainfall.

    You may have time on your hands now but how much time will you have for future maintenance?  Do you want colour, seating area, eating area, BBQ, water feature?   Doe sit need to include some storage or recycling space?

    That concrete (I assume that's what I see), do you want to get rid of it?
