Drainage clay soil garden

I'm trying to drain my garden from rain water that stands on top of the soil, digging is 6 inches of soil then it's hard clay... Is it best to add preferred pipe or just add gravel to the trench...

if you put a pipe in, where will the water end up?
    Devon.
  • There's a drain on the other side of the fence, someone said I don't need pipe and just to add gravel, but I think that the water will just settle in the gravel and eventually flood back up

Sorry if I sound think, but is the drain in your neighbour's garden? What sort of drain is it?
    Devon.

You need a single wall perforated land drainage pipe and obviously an appropriate fall. Back fill with stone and grit before reinstating your top soil and turf. Be aware though that these areas will dry out first in any dry weather so you'll have visible lines on the lawn where the drains are but this is the trade off to the waterlogged scenario. Where you eventually drain it to is of course up to you and no doubt folks will want to comment about that but that's your call. Just don't impact the neighbours. Lot's of stuff on YouTube to help you on your way. Good luck.

We had the same issue, and did what @Dave Humby suggests.  You can't really see it from this photo, but the grey pipe has lots of holes in it.  We also lined the trench with membrane, to stop the surrounding clay from mixing with the gravel.

Yep it needs to drain away somewhere else it will just fill up with water and do very little.
