Which mahonia please?

CopperdogCopperdog Posts: 617
Does anyone know which variety of mahonia this is please? Are the golden colours normal or is it starved where I bought it over a year ago and haven’t planted it! Is it a bit starved?
also I want to plant it in a spot where I had a badly rusted shrub hypericum - will it be ok in same spot?

It's a wonder it's still alive in that wee pot!
It's probably 'Charity' as that's the most common one, or 'Winter Sun'.
The colouring can happen when there's colder weather and some foliage then dies off, but it's also down to stress, which is far more likely in this case. Either drought, or lack of nutrients , or both, will have contributed.
If you prep the new area well, it should be fine to plant it out there. They're very tough, and you can also prune them back now and again. I'd just get that planted as soon as possible, as long as you don't have any frosts forecast.
Soak it thoroughly and tease the roots out a little beforehand, but don't over feed it - some decent compost, manure if you have it, and a small sprinkling of something like Blood Fish and Bone will be enough. A really thorough watering too after planting.
It should come away again  :)
It's a place where beautiful isn't enough of a word....

Thankyou @Fairygirl xx I didn’t know if there was a more autumn coloured leaf variety or whether I had just stressed this one 😞 appreciate your help xxx

Even healthy ones can look a bit crap after winter, with some manky foliage.
I usually just remove those from mine  :)
