Front garden help

We currently have a silver birch in our front garden. It's getting too big for the space, and is blocking a lot of light into the front of the house.

We are hoping to have the tree cut down in the next few weeks but not sure what to do next.

If we grind out the stump can we replant in the same spot. I would love to put another tree that's a lot smaller I was think something like a amelanchier. But don't know if this is possible.

The front is east facing and clay soil.

Thanks for any advice you can give

If the stump is ground out, replanting won't be a problem as long as you put in good bagged manure and new top soil. The nutrient value of the existing soil will be severely depleted by the birch as they are very greedy, shallow rooted trees. You might also want to check that an amelanchier will do well in your locality, aspect and soil.
