What shall I plant?

I have a pergola/ seating effort. The front faces almost directly south.
Behind it is an area of dappled shade. But around midday in mid summer, it gets hot enough to burn the leaves of a nearby red acer to a crisp.
I would like to plant something in the corner . It can scramble over the pergola or be free-standing. I don't mind. 
Does anyone have any suggestions?

Clay soil which can get baked. I have a large barrow load of home compost which I will use to improve soil a bit but I'm not expecting miracles.

    honeysuckles or summer jasmines are more tolerant of full sun than most climbers. Neither is especially fussy on soil. Depends if you like the smell, of course.

    I already have a honeysuckle on the other side, but another one different one would be nice. I have the ordinary white jasmine that is fairly rampant elsewhere. Is that the one you mean @raisingirl?
    I like the smell of both very much.

    Clematis Betty Corning does well even on my clay soil and covers nicely in the summer. It also smell lovely. But I would use two climbers one with more cover and something more fine leaved like the clematis to provide filtering of sun and wind.
