Creating natural height in a low fenced garden.

I live in a terraced house with a lovely back garden and shed.  The garden is split level with the main area at the top (all the houses have a similar pattern).  I want some ideas that would create some natural height but is not too overbearing (we like our neighbours).

    fastigiate trees (upright columns-rather than busy)
    or something light canopied like a silver birch or one of the cut leaved Japanese acers.
    or pleached trees
    or a pergola with climbers over it, i've seen it done with just upright posts and wires connecting them (with climbers over it)
