JAPANESE GARDEN

I have just finished phase 1 of my revamp of my small rear garden to a Japanese theme (Rock, Water, trees). Will look much better when the Acers etc come into leaf. I am particularly pleased with the Wall plaques I made. It has a water feature and a raised mini pond.
What do other Gardeners think?

I think you need some height in the garden. Do Japanese gardens have climbers?

  • The bamboo and acers will grow in time, think i should get some tall bamboo for instant effect. Thanks.

What is phase 2 going to be? Some moss would really help soften the hard edges and stick with the Japanese theme. Maybe a nice living wall of ferns. The water feature looks a bit lost in the corner but if you painted the brown fence green to match the other one it would stand out better. What does the plaque say by the way?
If you can keep your head, while those around you are losing theirs, you may not have grasped the seriousness of the situation.
  • The plaque is the Japanese symbols for rock, water and trees. Phase 2 involves more acers and phase 3 is ageing! My plan is that the garden will outlive me.......the korean firs will take years to mature!

I thought it might have said 'keep off the grass' or something.  :p   My advice for a long term acer garden is to keep buying trees when they're small and cheap and growing them on. Eventually some will get too big for pots and need rehoming and you'll have a supply of replacements. The ones with colourful bark look good in winter when there's not much else to look at.

  • Thanks, I have grown Acers before, trouble it takes years to get to a good size.................. you have to have patience with Oriental gardenning!

i'd paint all the fences the same colour, dark grey or even black, it would show the foliage of the plants off better.
think about getting some Hostas, you can get all sizes now from monsters like 'sum and substance' to the mouse miniatures and everything from dark green, variegated to blue.
also you can do short bonsai monkey posts, with bonsai on obviously

Yes a good start. I agree get the black fence paint, it will give depth to the garden. Next you could do with a few large stones to landscape the area.
