Lawns

When should I do the first cut of my lawns? Neighbours have already cut theirs last week but although grass is getting high it's soaking wet....

    Welcome to the forum  :)
You can use a broom to sweep off moisture and make sure the grass is upright before cutting.
Do you have a flymo or another type of mower?
We have a few lawn experts on here who are able to advise.

My grass has been growing all through the winter but I can't cut it yet as I have Fritillary,Aconites,Anemone,Crocus,Daffodils,Celandines,Daisies,Bluebells,Scilla and what have you all coming up so I am going to leave it till they have finished before I mow!!

  • Hi. I raked the leaves and catkins off the lawns so it does look tidier but am going to have to wait a while yet as it's raining again.

my grass hasn't been cut since last September and it's like marsh , so no idea when it'll be cut.

Just been mowing my lawn, with mower set at its highest setting. Of course it all depends on your local conditions.

It's important to know your own conditions and work with them.
Trampling around on soaking ground is counter productive. Waiting for spell of drier weather is the way to go, to allow ground to dry out a bit, and only taking a small amount off is equally important. Don't scalp it.
Cut it two or three times in the first month or 6 weeks [depending on conditions]  taking off a little each time and you'll gradually get it back to a normal length, as the growth rate will be slower for a while yet .
Not much chance of cutting mine [not that it's of any length] as it's currently covered in snow  :D
